Total energy consumption has been increasing at the rapid pace of 4.1%/year since 2010, reaching 14.2 Mtoe in 2016. It remained stable throughout 2017. The energy intensity of GDP has been decreasing sharply since 1990 (-74%) and 12% above the EU's level at purchasing power parity.

Crude oil production

Oil production has decreased by 30% since 2010, from 51 Mt to 39 Mt in 2017. Previously, direct, foreign investments greatly boosted the country's oil production, which more than tripled between 2004 and 2010, partly with the start of the Shah-Deniz field in 2006.

CO2 fuel combustion/CO2 emissions

In its NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution), Azerbaijan made a commitment to reduce its level of GHG emissions by 35% by 2030 compared to 1990.

CO2 emissions from energy combustion have been increasing since 2010 (32.5 Mt in 2017); they remained roughly stable at around 28 MtCO2 between 1996 and 2008.
