Total Energy Consumption

The energy consumption per capita in 2022 was around 0.15 toe/cap (4 times lower than the average for Sub-Saharan Africa). The electricity consumption per capita in 2022 reached 15 kWh/cap, which is 22 times lower than the average for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Total energy consumption is increasing regularly at a slow pace (+2%/year since 2010).

Biomass accounts the largest part of the energy consumed, 73% in 2022, while oil represents 27%.

Crude Oil Production

Oil production has increased by 5% in 2022, reaching 7.0, following several years of fluctuation between 6.5 Mt and 6.9 Mt since 2018. Production started in 2003. Output peaked at 8.7 Mt/year in 2004 and 2005. Crude oil production declined by 50% between 2005 and 2014 to 4.4 Mt due to high water cut, low reservoir pressure, unconsolidated sands, and complex reservoir geometry.

The 250 kb/d (13 Mt/year) Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline between the Doba oil filed in Chad and the port of Kribi in Cameroon (1 070 km) was commissioned in 2003.

Renewable in % Electricity Production

The Agency for the Development of Renewable Energies (ADER) is the parastatal in charge of the promotion of renewables. However, its resources, which come from the State budget, are insufficient to ensure its full operationalisation.

Chad had no renewable power plants in operations until 2016. The country currently operates a wind power plant with a capacity of 1 MW, alongside a solar power plant of 5 MW. The target outlined in the 2018 Energy Policy Statement is to achieve a 20% share of renewable electricity in national production by 2030.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

According to the inventory results, GHG emissions including LULUCF have increased by 50% since 2010, from 49 MtCO2eq to 74 MtCO2eq in 2018. Agriculture is the main emitting sector, accounting for around 95% of this total. In its updated NDC (2021), the country lowered its GHG emission reduction target from 71% to 19.3% of the BAU projection in 2030. The reduction target is divided into an unconditional target of 0.5% and a conditional target of 18.8%.
