  • Energy Companies


    Azerenerji is Azerbaijan's public vertically integrated electricity company. It was transformed into a public holding company in 1996, and should be privatised once it has been able to produce sufficient profit to reimburse its debts.

  • Energy Supply


    Azerbaijan has important hydrocarbon reserves: 952 Mt for oil and 1 435 bcm for gas (at the end of 2018). Hydroelectric resources are relatively abundant (43 TWh) and only a small proportion is exploited. The wind and solar energy potentials are estimated at about 15 GW and 11 GW, respectively.

  • Energy Prices


    Over 2015-2016, the price of electricity remained at US$5.9c/kWh for all customers, while it remained close to US$7.6c/kWh until 2014. Since 2017, it returned to its 2014 level at US$7.3c/kWh for industry and US$7.5c/kWh for households.


  • Energy Consumption

    Per capita consumption is around 1.4 toe in 2018, including 2 086 kWh of electricity.

    Total energy consumption increased at the rapid pace of 4%/year between 2010 and 2016; it remained stable throughout 2018 (14 Mtoe).

    The energy intensity of GDP has been decreasing sharply since 1990 (-5%) and is now 12% above the EU's level at purchasing power parity.

  • Issues & Prospects

    The hydrocarbon sector is driving the country's dynamic economic growth. Thanks to the investments made in the energy sector, the country experienced a growth of 25%-30%/year over the period 2005-2007 and around 10% in 2008 and 2009.
