  • Institutions & Energy Policy

The Ministry of Petroleum and Hydrocarbons and the Ministry of Energy and Hydraulic Resources share responsibility for the energy sector.

Gabon is the fifth largest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2018, oil revenues represented around 25% of the GDP, vs 50% in 2012, steady after the end of a decline in prices.

  • Energy Companies

Perenco dominates natural gas production (gross production of 50mcf/d announced in 2017). It supplies the Owendo (Libreville port) and Port-Gentil power stations through a 450 km pipeline. The company signed an agreement in 2019 to operate the Olowi field, that might have high gas reserves, with the encouragement of the Government that wishes to develop this sector.

  • Energy Supply

Gabon is well endowed with energy resources. Proven gas reserves reach 26 bcm (end of 2018) and oil reserves 272 Mt. A large share of the reserves is in deep offshore waters. The hydroelectric potential is amongst the highest of the African continent and is estimated at about 5 000-6 000 MW. About 85% of the country is covered by forests, a little more than 1/3 of which are exploited.

  • Energy Prices
