  • Institutions & Energy Policy

The Ministry of Petroleum is responsible for the entire hydrocarbons sector: oil, gas, refining and petrochemicals. The Ministry of Energy covers the electricity sector and the energy efficiency policy.

The Supreme Energy Council (SEC), that brings together the Ministries of Petroleum, Energy, Economy, Trade, Industry and Mines, is in charge of coordinating the energy projects. Iran ...

  • Energy Companies

Tavanir, the Iran Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company, is the vertically integrated national electricity company and controls 16 regional electricity companies.

  • Energy Supply

Iran has the world's second largest gas reserves (behind Russia), amounting to about 33 900 bcm, i.e. more than 16% of the world's total conventional gas reserves (end of 2019). Most of those reserves have not yet been exploited because they are not linked to oil fields ("non-associated gas"), and because two thirds are located in offshore fields. The largest field is South Pars (12 500 bcm ...

  • Energy Prices

Prices are set by the authorities. They are still heavily subsidised and are among the lowest in the world. Electricity prices increased strongly in 2011 in the framework of a five-year programme to reduce subsidies. Prices then decreased in US$ with the high inflation and weaker local currency: US$1.9c/kWh for industry and US$1.4c/kWh for households in 2019.

  • Energy Consumption

Per capita energy consumption stands at 3.1 toe (similar to that in the Middle East or the EU average), including about 3 100 kWh in 2019.

Energy consumption grew by 3.5%/year between 2010 and 2018 and then dropped by 5% in 2019 to 258 Mtoe, due to the recession caused by low oil prices and economic sanctions.

Natural gas accounts for almost 75% of total energy consumption ...

  • Issues & Prospects

Iran's aim to develop its hydrocarbon resources, particularly its gas exports, had been slowed down due to the renewed US sanctions and increased geopolitical tensions.
