    About 30% of the supply is provided by 3 subsidiaries of multinational companies (Total - with over 60 service stations, Exxon-Mobil and Shell) that are gathered in the GPP ("Groupement des Professionnels du Pétrole"). Malian companies supply the rest of the market and are gathered in GMPP ("Groupement Malien des Professionnels du Pétrole").

  • Energy Supply


    Mali has no proven fossil fuel reserves and is entirely dependent on imports. The hydroelectric potential of the Senegal River is estimated at 1 000 MW. Forests cover 300 000 km2, 33 000 km2 of which are listed (25% of the surface area of Mali).

  • Energy Prices


    Prices are subsidised for all categories of consumers (average price of FCFA 96.5/kWh (US$16.5c/kWh) and subsidy of FCFA 31.6/kWh (US$5.4c/kWh)) to cover the average cost of FCFA 128/kWh (US$22c/kWh) in 2017. The amount of subsidies was estimated in 2015 at FCFA 42bn (US$71m), of which 41% for the social tariff, 27% for the normal tariff and 32% for the medium voltage (industry). ...

  • Energy Consumption

    Energy consumption per capita is low, at about 0.27 toe/capita, including 180 kWh of electricity (2018).

    In 2018, energy consumption was dominated by biomass, which represented 66% of the total energy consumption, followed by oil with 30% and hydroelectricity and power imports with 4%.
