    About 45% of the supply is provided by 3 subsidiaries of multinational companies (Total (30%), Exxon-Mobil (9%), and Shell (6%)) that make up the "Groupement Professionnel des Pétroliers du Mali" (GPP) in which Total holds a 63% stake.

  • Energy Supply


    Mali has no proven fossil fuel reserves and is entirely dependent on imports. The hydroelectric potential of the Senegal River is estimated at 1 000 MW. Forests cover 300 000 km2, 33 000 km2 of which are listed (25% of the surface area of Mali).

    Oil product prices have been controlled since 2001 because of hikes in international prices; they are revised on a monthly basis according to international prices.   • Energy Consumption

    Energy consumption per capita is low, at about 0.18 toe/capita (0.07 toe excluding biomass), including 100 kWh of electricity (2014).

    In 2014, energy consumption is dominated by biomass, which represent 63% of the total energy consumption, followed by oil with 34% and hydro with 3%.

  • Issues & Prospects


    The country foresees a strong increase in demand, mainly due to an extension of the electricity distribution network and an increase in the agro-industrial demand. Political unrest in the country since 2012 has led to some delays in the commissioning of several power projects.
