  • Energy Supply


    Due to the "bad" results in oil exploration, Mauritania's proven oil reserves were re-evaluated sharply downwards in 2011, from 14 Mt in 2010 to 2.8 Mt (end of 2017). Gas reserves are estimated at around 28 bcm.

  • Energy Prices


    The price is low compared to the high production costs, but very high compared to the standard of living of the population (about half of the population lives on approximately US$1 per day). The prices are US$11.5c/kWh for industry and US$8.6c/kWh for households.


  • Energy Consumption

    Energy consumption per inhabitant is estimated at 0.33 toe, including 225 kWh of electricity (2017).

    Total energy consumption is growing rapidly (+4.3%/year, on average, since 2007) and stood at 1.5 Mtoe in 2017.

    Oil covers 65% of the country's energy needs and biomass 33%. Oil is mainly used for electricity production (46%) and by the transport sector (44%) (2017).
