    Mozambique owns large energy resources. The country has a large hydro potential, estimated at 12 500 MW. It is mainly located in the Zambezi Valley, which includes the existing Cahora Bassa Dam.     Electricity prices remained stable between 2010 and 2014 and decreased as of 2014 for households. In 2016, average electricity tariffs for agriculture and industry were around US$4.4c/kWh, and around US$7.7c/kWh for households.

  • Energy Consumption

    Per capita consumption is around 0.47 toe and 435 kWh of electricity (2016). It is below the regional average.


    Total energy consumption has been increasing by 4%/year, on average, since 2000. In 2016 biomass ensured about 70% of the country's supplies, hydroelectricity 9%, oil 9% and gas 5%.


  • Issues & Prospects

    The main issues for the coming years are the exploitation of fossil fuel resources, which will mainly depend on foreign investments. The country aims for natural gas to contribute about 18% of the energy supply in 2030 and coal 25%.
