  • Energy Supply

The Netherlands has significant natural gas reserves (789 bcm of proven reserves at end-2017), 75% of which come from the Groningen field, which is one of the largest fields in the world. According to a 2013 study, the Netherlands has 200 to 500 bcm of technically recoverable reserves of shale gas. Oil and hydroelectric resources are scarce (34 Mt for oil in 2017).

  • Energy Prices

The Energy Tax on electricity consumption has been raised several times since its implementation in 1996, from €1.34c/kWh to just over €10.1c/kWh for households in 2017. It was reduced by 16% in 2016 and increased by 0.6% in 2017. Taxes rates are lower for higher consumption. The prices for final consumers started to drop in 2014 before plunging in 2016 due to the wholesale price reduction ...

  • Energy Consumption

Consumption per capita (4.4 toe in 2017) is 40% higher than the EU average, mainly because of the large refining and petrochemical industries. Per capita electricity consumption is 6 400 kWh, which is 14% above the EU average.

Total energy consumption decreased, on average, by 2.5%/year between its peak in 2010 (83 Mtoe) and 2015, and has been increasing since then by 1%/year(76 Mtoe ...

  • Issues & Prospects

According to NEO 2017, final energy consumption is projected to be more than 4% lower in 2020 than in 2016, while the 2030 figures will be 8% lower. Primary energy consumption is expected to drop by 1.7% per year over 2013-2020. This rapid reduction is attributed to a combination of factors such as slower economic growth, slower population increase, technological progress and energy ...
