    The country has large gas reserves: proven reserves are estimated at 216 bcm (end of 2019) and have decreased by 18% since 2010. Proven oil reserves are 15 Mt. The country also has a strong geothermal potential, estimated at between 3-4 GW. The solar potential is large (about 2 500 hours of sunshine per year in Port Moresby).

  • Energy Consumption

    Total energy consumption per capita reached 0.52 toe in 2018. Electricity consumption per capita is 580 kWh (2018).

    Total energy consumption increased by 12% in 2018. It is mainly covered by oil (48%) and biomass (33%). Hydropower and geothermal (primary electricity) and gas cover the remainder (10% and 9%, respectively).


  • Issues & Prospects

    In the APEC 7th edition of Energy Demand and Supply Outlook report, primary energy demand is projected to increase from 2.4 Mtoe in 2016 to 5 Mtoe in 2050 (BAU scenario).
