    Turkmengaz is the national gas production and marketing company.

    Turkmenrosgaz (51% State, 44% Gazprom, 5% Itera) is the company in charge of gas exports to Russia.

    The main foreign companies involved in the development of offshore fields are Eni (production zone of Nebit Dag), Petronas, CNPC and Dragon Oil.

    Turkmenistan has the fourth largest natural gas reserves in the world after Russia, Iran and Qatar, estimated at 9 870 bcm at the end of 2016; those reserves have been dramatically revised upwards since 2007, when they were estimated at 2 680 bcm.   • Energy Prices


    Electricity subsidies formally started in 1993 and in 2003 were extended until 2020. A limited quantity of electricity was supplied free of charge to the population (35 kWh/month from 1993 to 2016 and 25 kWh until October 2017).

  • Energy Consumption

    Per capita consumption is 5.7 toe, with electricity accounting for around 2 500 kWh in 2015.

    Total energy consumption has been increasing rapidly since 2000 (5.4%/year, on average) and reached 32 Mtoe in 2015. Natural gas represents 79% of that consumption and oil 21%.



  • Issues & Prospects

    Foreign investments tend to be more diversified, mainly focusing on the energy sector, but with a growing share allocated to chemicals, especially fertilizers. In 2015, total foreign investments reached US$4.3bn. In total, Turkmenistan plans to spend US$46bn in the oil sector until 2025.
