Total Energy Consumption

Per capita consumption is very high, fluctuating around 7.6 toe since 2020 (in the world's top 10 highest), with electricity fluctuating around 15 MWh/capita since 2015 (also in the world's top 10).

Total energy consumption increased by 6% in 2021, after a 12% drop in 2020. It increased sharply from 2014 to 2016 and fluctuated at around 36 Mtoe until 2019. It was previously quite stable between 2008 and 2013 (around 28 Mtoe).

Crude Oil Production

Crude oil production has been decreasing since 2020 (-9% in 2020 and -1% in 2021), reaching 130 Mt. It increased by more than 50% between 2000 and 2012, when it reached its peak at 158 Mt. After remaining roughly stable until 2016, it decreased by 7.5% in 2017 and remained stable at around 145 Mt in 2018 and 2019, mainly due to production cuts decided by OPEC. Its production represents just less than 10% of total OPEC output.

Kuwait exported 3/4 of its production in 2021.

Renewable in % Electricity Production

The country set an ambitious goal to generate 15% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, as part of the goals set in its New Vision 2035. Several photovoltaic projects are ongoing; however, no flagship policy has yet been implemented to speed-up the development of renewables.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

In its updated NDC (2021), Kuwait pledged to cut GHG emissions by 7.4% by 2035, compared to a BAU projection. This would reduce GHG emissions by nearly 11 MtCO2eq to 132 MtCO2eq, corresponding to emissions 54% higher than in 2016 (reference year). Most of the reduction would come from an oil-to-gas substitution in energy production, new CCGT power plants, energy efficiency measures, and renewable projects; the country would also promote carbon capture and storage and mangrove cultivation.
