Total Energy Consumption

Energy consumption per capita is estimated at 0.4 toe in 2021 (compared to 0.3 toe in Mali and Senegal and 0.6 toe in Morocco), including 260 kWh of electricity (compared to 140 kWh in Mali, 290 kWh in Senegal, and 930 kWh in Morocco).

Total energy consumption is growing rapidly (+5.8%/year, on average, since 2010) and reached 2 Mtoe in 2020.

Oil covers 71% of the country's energy needs in 2021 (compared to 58% in 2010), biomass 27% (-9% points since 2010), and primary electricity (solar and wind) 2% (stable).

Crude Oil Production

Crude oil production stopped in 2017 after the Chinguetti field moved to the decommissioning phase.

The country's only refinery ended operations in 2000. Mauritania imported 1.6 Mt of oil products in 2021.

Renewable in % Electricity Production

The Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP, 2011) set the objective of a share of 20% of renewables in power production in in 2020. The target was almost achieved (19% of renewables in the power mix in 2020, of which 10% for solar and 9% for wind).

According to the country's NDC, renewables should account for 50% of Mauritania's power mix in 2030.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

In its updated NDC, the country set a GHG emissions reduction target of 92% in 2030, compared to a BAU scenario. The reduction target is divided into an unconditional reduction target of 11% and a conditional target of 81%, almost reaching carbon neutrality by the end of the decade. Mauritania expects to attain net zero emissions by 2050 on its own resources.

Under its BAU scenario, Mauritania estimates GHG emissions at around 17 MtCO2eq by 2030, which is 70% more than in 2018 (reference year). The 92% cut would limit GHG emissions by nearly 16 MtCO2eq to 1 MtCO2eq.
